How Tooth Extraction Work?

Tooth Extraction - Precision Dentistry of Howard

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone. Dentists may recommend tooth extraction for various reasons, including severe tooth decay, advanced gum disease, overcrowding, or trauma. Here are six ways in which tooth extraction typically works:

1
Assessment and Diagnosis

Before extracting a tooth, the dentist will conduct a thorough examination, which may include X-rays. This helps in assessing the tooth’s condition, the surrounding bone, and the overall oral health. Based on the evaluation, the dentist will determine whether extraction is necessary.

2
Local Anesthesia

To ensure the patient’s comfort during the procedure, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth to be extracted. In some cases, conscious sedation or general anesthesia may be used for more complex extractions or for patients with anxiety.

3
Loosening the Tooth

Once the area is numb, the dentist will use specialized instruments, such as an elevator, to gently loosen the tooth within its socket. The elevator helps to lift the tooth and widen the socket, making it easier to remove.

4
Extraction with Forceps

Dental forceps are then used to grasp the tooth firmly and facilitate its removal. The dentist will carefully rock the tooth back and forth to widen the socket further and dislodge the tooth from the surrounding tissues.

5
Socket Care

After the tooth is removed, the dentist will clean and irrigate the socket to remove any remaining debris or infection. In some cases, the dentist may need to smooth out the edges of the socket to promote proper healing.

6
Post-Extraction Care

Once the tooth is extracted, the dentist will provide post-extraction care instructions. This may include prescribing pain medication, advising on proper oral hygiene practices, and suggesting any necessary follow-up appointments. Patients are often advised to avoid certain activities, such as vigorous rinsing or drinking through a straw, to prevent complications during the initial healing period.

Tooth Extraction - Precision Dentistry of Howard

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone. It’s usually done by a dentist or an oral surgeon and can be necessary for various reasons, such as severe decay, infection, crowding, or trauma. Here’s a general overview of the procedure:

1
Assessment
Before extraction, your dentist will examine your tooth and take X-rays to understand the tooth's position and the surrounding bone.
2
Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is typically used to numb the area around the tooth to minimize pain during the procedure. In some cases, sedation or general anesthesia might be used, especially if multiple teeth are being removed or if the extraction is complex.
3
Extraction
Using specialized instruments, the dentist or oral surgeon will loosen the tooth within its socket. They may gently rock the tooth back and forth to widen the socket before removal. Sometimes, they may need to cut the tooth into sections for easier extraction, particularly if it's impacted (trapped beneath the gum).
4
Closure
Once the tooth is removed, the area might be stitched closed if necessary. Gauze is usually placed over the extraction site to control bleeding and to help a blood clot form.
5
Aftercare
After surgery, follow instructions: Bite gauze for bleeding control, manage pain with medications, use ice packs to reduce swelling, avoid specific activities, and follow dietary restrictions like consuming soft foods.
6
Healing
The healing process typically takes a few days to a few weeks. During this time, new bone and gum tissue will grow to fill the gap left by the extracted tooth.
7
Follow-up
You might have a follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing and to remove any stitches if necessary.

Tooth Extraction - Precision Dentistry of Howard
My experience with Precision Dentistry has been stellar and a blessing. If you are looking for a one-stop shop (extractions, implants, full mouth reconstruction, etc.) as well as very personalized and accommodating care, then Precision Dentistry should be your choice. Unlike the corporate run, impersonal dental offices that I have experienced, Precision Dentistry provides expert and patient-focused care. Dr. O'Donoghue listens to your needs/issues, carefully explains his diagnosis and options in an easily understandable fashion, and works diligently to deliver the final result in the desired timeframe. After being warned by multiple dentists for years that my teeth were very worn and that I would start experiencing cracked teeth, root canals/crowns, implants, etc., I could choose to address these problems as they arose or do a full-mouth reconstruction. Having yet another cracked, abscessed tooth, I visited Dr. O'Donoghue for advice based upon a referral from another Green Bay dentist - it should be noted that I reside part time on an Island 3 hours from Green Bay. During this initial meeting in mid-July, I told Dr. O'Donoghue that I'd been waiting for 3 weeks for Door County Oral Surgeons to schedule an appointment to extract the troublesome tooth. He took an X-ray and advised that he could extract the tooth that day rather than having me wait for an Oral Surgeon appointment. I said: let's do it. The tooth was successfully extracted; he also did a bone graft to prep for an implant. He then reviewed his 20+ years of experience in full mouth reconstructions, advised that he preferred the durability and consistent look of zirconium crowns (versus a mix and match of crowns and veneers), and outlined his background in working with and accommodating patients who reside hours away from his office (he practiced in Alaska for a couple of decades, where patients traveled great distances). I also advised that I planned to leave the Island for my permanent residence in California at the end of October and asked if there was enough time to do the full-mouth reconstruction before the end of October (every other dentist that I spoke to in Door County and Green Bay said: no). Dr. O'Donoghue said: yes. Dr. O'Donoghue also reviewed crown pricing, which is $1000 less per tooth than the price that my California dental office quoted to me a year ago. In this regard, my California dental office transitioned from a family-style dentist to a corporate-style office a decade or so ago and has a revolving door of new, recently graduated dentists. Besides the cost, this is the other reason why I'd been hesitant to proceed with a full-mouth reconstruction with my California dental office. Precision Dental's boutique-style of expert service and reasonable pricing eliminated my concerns in proceeding. It is now the beginning of October and I have 27 zirconium crowns and the implant prepped for the tooth that was extracted in mid-July - Dr. O'Donoghue will make and install the implant (28th crown) when I return to Wisconsin in May 2024. I'm closing in on my 60th birthday and I must say that this is the best medical/dental care that I have experienced in my lifetime. In this regard, not only is Dr. O'Donoghue a gem, but so are his assistants (Katerina and Sophia). Thank you Precision Dentistry!

Absolutely fabulous implant consultation. Both Katrina and Dr. Craig were extremely thorough. They walked us through the entire implant process. Showing us the differences, explaining how each one functions as well as walked us through step by step how the process would begin. Highly recommend.

I want to thank everyone for the best pain free tooth extraction I've ever experienced. Doc was right when he commented the worst it tastes the better it works. 😎 Even after the numbing wore off I (my nosey tongue) had to check and see if it was really gone because there was no pain. I'm not complaining !! Thanks again, Pam

Tooth Extraction - Precision Dentistry of Howard
I came to the office at Precision Dental of Howard for a consult about tooth implants to replace two teeth that I had extracted. Prior to the extractions, I had an ongoing infection in my mouth that 2 dentists, 2 ENT's, and an oral surgeon could not figure out. I had one x-ray at Precision Dental, and Dr. O'Donoghue was able to tell me more about the possible origins of the infection than all of the providers that I had seen combined. The news was not great, but I was so grateful for his expertise and explanation of what may be going on. Clearly, he has so much knowledge to share, and truly wants to help people. I am beyond appreciative that I may be finally figuring out the source of the infection, and taking steps to once again have a healthy mouth and smile. It has been a very long road. Very happy to have found him!
