Discover Porcelain Veneers' Brilliance

Tooth extraction, a common dental procedure, involves the careful removal of a damaged or problematic tooth. It’s performed under local anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort. Dentists use specialized tools to gently extract the tooth, promoting oral health and alleviating potential pain or infection.

Two Main Types of Veneers

Veneers - Precision Dentistry of Howard
Veneers are thin shells, typically made of porcelain or composite resin, that are custom-made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. They are used to improve the appearance of teeth by addressing issues such as discoloration, staining, chipping, or misalignment. Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry option for individuals looking to enhance the aesthetics of their smiles. There are two main types of veneers:

Healthy Lifestyle Choices

These are thin, custom-made shells crafted from porcelain. Porcelain veneers are known for their durability, stain resistance, and ability to mimic the natural appearance of teeth. The process of getting porcelain veneers usually involves removing a small amount of enamel from the front surface of the tooth to make room for the veneer. The veneers are then bonded to the teeth using dental cement.

Composite Resin Veneers

These veneers are made from a tooth-colored composite resin material. Unlike porcelain veneers, composite veneers can often be applied directly to the tooth surface without the need for significant enamel removal. The composite resin is shaped and bonded to the tooth, and then it is hardened using a special light.

How Does Veneers Work?

Veneers - Precision Dentistry of Howard
Veneers enhance smiles by bonding custom-made porcelain shells to teeth, concealing imperfections. Minimal tooth reduction ensures a seamless fit, transforming appearance with a durable, natural-looking result.

Cosmetic Enhancement

Porcelain veneers are primarily used for cosmetic purposes to enhance the appearance of teeth. They can effectively cover up stains, discoloration, and uneven tooth color, giving the teeth a whiter and more uniform look. This is especially beneficial for individuals with teeth that are resistant to traditional teeth-whitening methods.

Correction of Tooth Shape and Size

Veneers can be used to improve the shape and size of teeth. If a tooth is too small or has an irregular shape, a porcelain veneer can be custom-designed to create a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing appearance. This is often done for front teeth to achieve a balanced smile.

Alignment Improvement

In cases where teeth are mildly misaligned or have small gaps between them, porcelain veneers can provide a cosmetic solution.
The veneers can be crafted to give the appearance of straighter teeth, improving overall dental alignment without the need for extensive orthodontic work.

Repair of Minor Dental Damage

Porcelain veneers can be used to conceal minor dental imperfections, such as chipped or slightly cracked teeth. By bonding the veneer to the damaged tooth, the veneer acts as a protective layer, restoring the tooth’s appearance and preventing further damage.

Stain Resistance

Porcelain is a ceramic material that is resistant to stains, making veneers a durable and long-lasting solution for maintaining a bright and attractive smile. Unlike natural tooth enamel, porcelain does not easily absorb pigments from food, beverages, or tobacco, helping to keep the veneers looking new for an extended period.

Veneers FAQs

What are dental veneers?
Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth. At Precision Dentistry of Howard, we craft veneers from high-quality materials to enhance the appearance of your teeth, addressing issues like discoloration, misalignment, or chips. This minimally invasive solution provides a natural-looking, durable, and stain-resistant smile transformation.
Veneers at Precision Dentistry of Howard are crafted to be long-lasting, with a typical lifespan of 10-15 years. However, their durability is influenced by factors like oral hygiene practices and lifestyle choices. Regular dental check-ups and maintaining good oral care habits can significantly extend the longevity of your veneers, ensuring a beautiful smile for years to come.
While veneers can improve the appearance of slightly misaligned teeth, they are not a substitute for orthodontic treatment. For more significant misalignments, our dental team may recommend orthodontic solutions. However, veneers can be a suitable option for those looking to address minor cosmetic issues and achieve a straighter, more uniform smile at Precision Dentistry of Howard.
Maintaining veneers is straightforward. Practice good oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups at Precision Dentistry of Howard. Avoid biting on hard objects or using your teeth as tools. While veneers are stain-resistant, it’s wise to limit the consumption of staining substances like coffee and red wine. Following these guidelines will help preserve the beauty and longevity of your veneers.
The process of getting veneers at Precision Dentistry of Howard involves minimal tooth alteration. While some enamel removal is necessary for proper adhesion, the procedure is considered irreversible. It’s crucial to discuss your expectations and concerns with our experienced dental team, ensuring that veneers are the right choice for your smile transformation.
Once properly placed by our skilled team at Precision Dentistry of Howard, veneers should feel comfortable and natural. The thin shells are custom-made to match the shape and color of your natural teeth, providing a seamless integration. Patients typically adapt quickly to the sensation of veneers, enjoying both the aesthetic and functional benefits they bring to their smiles.
Veneers are resistant to staining, providing a long-lasting bright smile. However, they don’t respond to traditional teeth whitening methods. If you’re considering teeth whitening, it’s recommended to undergo the procedure before getting veneers. Our team at Precision Dentistry of Howard can guide you on the best approach to achieve and maintain the desired level of whiteness for your veneers.
Veneers and crowns serve different purposes. Veneers are primarily cosmetic, enhancing the appearance of the front surface of teeth. Crowns, on the other hand, encase the entire tooth and are often used for structural restoration. Precision Dentistry of Howard will assess your specific needs to determine whether veneers or crowns are the optimal solution for your dental concerns.
While veneers can address various cosmetic issues, not everyone is an ideal candidate. Individuals with extensive tooth decay, gum disease, or insufficient enamel may require alternative treatments. Precision Dentistry of Howard conducts thorough evaluations to ensure each patient’s candidacy for veneers, considering factors such as oral health, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.
At Precision Dentistry of Howard, the veneer placement process typically involves a consultation, preparation, and bonding. During the consultation, our dental team will discuss your goals and conduct a thorough examination. Minimal enamel removal is done for preparation, and impressions are taken for custom veneer creation. Bonding involves securely attaching the veneers to your teeth, creating a stunning and durable smile transformation.

Veneers - Precision Dentistry of Howard
My experience with Precision Dentistry has been stellar and a blessing. If you are looking for a one-stop shop (extractions, implants, full mouth reconstruction, etc.) as well as very personalized and accommodating care, then Precision Dentistry should be your choice. Unlike the corporate run, impersonal dental offices that I have experienced, Precision Dentistry provides expert and patient-focused care. Dr. O'Donoghue listens to your needs/issues, carefully explains his diagnosis and options in an easily understandable fashion, and works diligently to deliver the final result in the desired timeframe. After being warned by multiple dentists for years that my teeth were very worn and that I would start experiencing cracked teeth, root canals/crowns, implants, etc., I could choose to address these problems as they arose or do a full-mouth reconstruction. Having yet another cracked, abscessed tooth, I visited Dr. O'Donoghue for advice based upon a referral from another Green Bay dentist - it should be noted that I reside part time on an Island 3 hours from Green Bay. During this initial meeting in mid-July, I told Dr. O'Donoghue that I'd been waiting for 3 weeks for Door County Oral Surgeons to schedule an appointment to extract the troublesome tooth. He took an X-ray and advised that he could extract the tooth that day rather than having me wait for an Oral Surgeon appointment. I said: let's do it. The tooth was successfully extracted; he also did a bone graft to prep for an implant. He then reviewed his 20+ years of experience in full mouth reconstructions, advised that he preferred the durability and consistent look of zirconium crowns (versus a mix and match of crowns and veneers), and outlined his background in working with and accommodating patients who reside hours away from his office (he practiced in Alaska for a couple of decades, where patients traveled great distances). I also advised that I planned to leave the Island for my permanent residence in California at the end of October and asked if there was enough time to do the full-mouth reconstruction before the end of October (every other dentist that I spoke to in Door County and Green Bay said: no). Dr. O'Donoghue said: yes. Dr. O'Donoghue also reviewed crown pricing, which is $1000 less per tooth than the price that my California dental office quoted to me a year ago. In this regard, my California dental office transitioned from a family-style dentist to a corporate-style office a decade or so ago and has a revolving door of new, recently graduated dentists. Besides the cost, this is the other reason why I'd been hesitant to proceed with a full-mouth reconstruction with my California dental office. Precision Dental's boutique-style of expert service and reasonable pricing eliminated my concerns in proceeding. It is now the beginning of October and I have 27 zirconium crowns and the implant prepped for the tooth that was extracted in mid-July - Dr. O'Donoghue will make and install the implant (28th crown) when I return to Wisconsin in May 2024. I'm closing in on my 60th birthday and I must say that this is the best medical/dental care that I have experienced in my lifetime. In this regard, not only is Dr. O'Donoghue a gem, but so are his assistants (Katerina and Sophia). Thank you Precision Dentistry!

Absolutely fabulous implant consultation. Both Katrina and Dr. Craig were extremely thorough. They walked us through the entire implant process. Showing us the differences, explaining how each one functions as well as walked us through step by step how the process would begin. Highly recommend.

I want to thank everyone for the best pain free tooth extraction I've ever experienced. Doc was right when he commented the worst it tastes the better it works. 😎 Even after the numbing wore off I (my nosey tongue) had to check and see if it was really gone because there was no pain. I'm not complaining !! Thanks again, Pam

Veneers - Precision Dentistry of Howard
I came to the office at Precision Dental of Howard for a consult about tooth implants to replace two teeth that I had extracted. Prior to the extractions, I had an ongoing infection in my mouth that 2 dentists, 2 ENT's, and an oral surgeon could not figure out. I had one x-ray at Precision Dental, and Dr. O'Donoghue was able to tell me more about the possible origins of the infection than all of the providers that I had seen combined. The news was not great, but I was so grateful for his expertise and explanation of what may be going on. Clearly, he has so much knowledge to share, and truly wants to help people. I am beyond appreciative that I may be finally figuring out the source of the infection, and taking steps to once again have a healthy mouth and smile. It has been a very long road. Very happy to have found him!

You made me feel very comfortable and I am a person who came to you for help with a mouth full of failed teeth and a white knuckle fear of the dentist. Your skills are quite extensive and your nature is kind, honest and gentle. In addition your staff is also splendid and very supportive and helpful. Katarina and Sophia, I can’t thank you enough and it is such a comfort, to me, as a patient, that you all work in sync with each other. Blessings to you all!!!
